Many women died in this era due to complications of birth and incurable diseases. Mary Todds father, Robert, remarried shortly after his first wifes death. Mary Todd never had a comfortable or loving relationship with her stepmother, Betsy. Betsy was often critical of Mary Todd and also shamed her in public. Mary Todd was sent to a boarding school for girls and excelled in her studies even though it was not common or acceptable for young ladies to continue with schooling after a certain age. Mary was fluent in French and was very excited and interested in political issues. In 1839, Mary Todd met and began a relationship with Abraham Lincoln. CIA Article Review and Anaylsis Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words

CIA Article Review and Anaylsis - Term Paper Example eport on CIA Accountability with Respect to the 9/11 Attacks. The analysis is conducted with a view to identifying the intelligence process, models and sources of intelligence, and organizational functions and structures existing just prior to the 9/11 attacks. The analysis will also identify and analyse how the traditional intelligence cycle identified in the OIG’s Report, point to a need for an alternative intelligence analysis such as the target-centric analysis presented by Clark. In this regard, Clark’s target-centric analysis involves an intelligence process that brings together all stakeholders: consumers, analysts and those who collect intelligence for collaboration and cohesion against a common and complex enemy. The objective is to build a shared picture of the target from which all participants can extract the elements they need to do their job.5 By reference to the OIG’s Report and drawing on Clark’s target-centric analysis this study identifie s the main purpose of intelligence analysis and how intelligence analysis failed to meet its objective. II. OIG Report on CIA Accountability with Respect to the 9/11 Attacks: Summary Intelligence analysis is designed to aid officials such as policymakers, the military, law enforcement and all stakeholders to respond to and to more accurately predict threats to national security.6 However, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) failed to meet this objective with respect to the 9/11 attacks despite the fact that the organization had gathered on al-Qaeda operatives 20 months prior to the attack. The intelligence collected indicated that a terror attack was eminent.7 Following a joint inquiry with respect to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Congress requested that the OIG conduct an investigation with a view to determining whether or not CIA officials and personnel in charge of intelligence gathering and analysis prior to and during 9/11 were and are responsible for failing to execute their d uties satisfactorily.8 As a result of its investigation, the OIG completed a report in 2005, although the report was not publically released until 2007 at which time only an executive summary of the report was released.9 The OIG’s report indicated that the CIA together with its personnel failed to execute their duties satisfactorily, although none of the relevant officers broke the law or acted in a way that involved â€Å"misconduct†.10 A review team, appointed by the OIG pursuant to the investigation concluded that although CIA officers throughout the organization worked aggressively with respect to al-Qaeda and Usama Bin Ladin, they â€Å"did not always work effectively and cooperatively†.11 The report goes on to state that the review team: ...found neither a â€Å"single point of failure† nor a â€Å"silver bullet† that would have enabled the Intelligence Community to predict or prevent the 9/11 attacks. The Team did find however, failure to im plement and manage important processes, failure to imple

A factual cyber atack Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

A factual cyber atack - Essay Example Some of the cyber crimes are much related to the actual crimes: frauds, thefts, etc. However, modern theory suggests that keeping illegal data on a computer is also a type of cyber crime (â€Å"What is Cyber Crime?†). As per the FBI reports, the United States military networks were penetrated by the Chinese hackers in 2004. The attackers accessed the US military networks and breached the security systems (Thornburgh). The set of codes assembled by the attackers was named the â€Å"Titan rain† (Thornburgh). The attack was discovered by â€Å"Shawn Carpenter†, who was on a secret job at that time. He discovered the set of codes while going through the network codes. The attackers tried to access the sensitive networks as those at Lockheed (Thornburgh). These attacks were supposed to be supported by the Chinese government but no particular evidence showed the fact, and Chinese government neglected the charge. On the other hand, there is a need to respond immediately to stop any more infiltration. The important concern is finding the severity of the attack and how much damage it did to the networks. The attackers could access the information, could make alteration in the information and the associated networks and could prevent certain permitted users to access the network. On the other hand, the important concern was that the corrupt programs might attack the certain hardware and might so influence the system that it will work improperly a great while (Thornburgh). The attackers made a silent escape all the time. The secret information was first converted to ZIP format and then sent immediately to China. The person who discovered the attackers, ‘Carpenter’, thinks that no such planned and rapid attack has happened in the past. In the US Time magazine, Carpenter says, â€Å"Most hackers, if they actually get into a government network, get excited and make mistakes, not these guys. They never hit a wrong key†

Career Integration Research Assignment: Athletic Training Essay

The field of athletic training is one of the fastest expanding careers today. This could be due to the much greater demand for health care providers. Athletic trainers specialize in preventing, diagnosing, and treating muscle and bone injuries. They work with a diverse group of patients, from young children to professional athletes. Athletic trainers are usually part of a sport medicine team, which tend to include a physician, physical therapist, and even a sport psychologist. Many athletic trainers work in educational facilities, such as high schools and colleges. However, much of their time is spent on the sport fields. The profession applies their wide range of medical knowledge; and in order to do so, athletic trainers must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to converse with the athletes, coaches, physicians, and parents (Occupational outlook handbook, 2012). Athletic trainers are mainly responsible for injury recovery and injury prevention. However, these responsibilities are physical concerns, but what about the mental concerns? There is a movement within the athletic training field to approach sport injuries with a more holistic perspective. Many athletic trainers have had inadequate education in sport psychology to institute any sort of psychological initiative in their rehabilitation programs. This paper will discuss some of the prospective ideas and various methods of rehabilitation tactics that could be used in the field, as well as how to perhaps properly train athletic trainers to administer these mental treatments, along with the physical treatments. These mental treatments will be related back to sport and exercise psychology concepts, such as strategies for setting realistic goals, methods for enc... .... (2009). Investors Valuation of Stock Essay

An investor should value a stock by looking at the intrinsic value of the stock and how the market value compare to the intrinsic value. The most common mathematical method of valuing stock is to determine the price earnings ratio (P/E). The P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by the company’s net income. As a general rule a P/E ratio should be in the higher teens. Stocks with a below-market P/E are considered cheaper, and a higher P/E ratio are considered expensive (Kansas, 2014). To evaluate if a stock is under or over-valued investors should look at the CAPM (Market securities Line) based on the Beta of the company and determine the performance of the stock. An investor can use indexes, such as the Dow Jones, NYSE, or S&P 500, in stock valuation. Value investing is common for investors. It is misrepresentation of price so the buyer buys a stock at a lower price than true worth or sells at a higher price than true worth. Considering all variables and determining true fault in price, this method provides investors easy margins. Investors’ value stocks using various strategies and methods, but all driving factors are in hopes of gaining margin and growth of the company invested in. The concept of stock valuation is simple. However, predicting the future is not as simple and can be complicated. Market Valuation of Stock Market and investors value stock differently. The market depends on expectations and recent information available to the market. The market’s value of stock are usually based on past history and trends. Based on current economic conditions we look at the past and see how it would look going forward. Through use of charts, value lines, or other indicators, the market looks at certain things such as floors, ceiling, resistance points, when valuing stock. The stock value is a collective price based on numerous variables considered, equaling a company’s worth combined with social trends and economic factors. The most common value of a stock for the market is the open and close prices. NASDAQ uses an auction approach called opening cross and closing cross to determine stock prices (â€Å"Stock Market Prices†, 2014). The opening cross uses computer software to determine opening prices for stocks based on night trading; buying and selling of stock during close of business. The closing cross software calculates closing price based on  that day’s trades. The technology takes into consideration each trade made at the exchange and sets what is referred to as the fairest closing price. The final stock prices are released after close of the exchange and work as a main factor for night trading. The amount an investor is willing to pay is often dependent on the prices set by the market. Stock Market Prices. (2014). http://money.howstuffworks.com/nasdaq-opening-closing- cross1.htm Kansas, D. How to Increase the UK’s Productivity? Essay

The UK government can adopt various supply side measures to further increase the productivity in workplace. First, it is absolutely vital to ensure that the education sector continues to receive large amount of funding from government. In fact, it is currently the third largest recipient of budget after social security and healthcare and should be in such position for many years to come even when the economy is not performing. Billions are spent onto building schools where literacy rate is relatively lower, training teachers, developing new curriculum or courses that suit industrial need and providing loans to undergraduates to increase their enrolment rate. The purpose is to increase the quantity and quality of workforce. Being more educated enables an individual to work independently, more efficient and understand complex instructions. Productivity gap between UK and rival economies like France and Germany will narrow. Next, the government can further tame the trade unions. Although we have not seen strikes like those during the era of Margaret Thatcher, industrial dispute that takes place from time to time is still a major concern for many employers. Consider the recent strikes by cabin crews in British Airways, immigration officers in ISU (Immigration Service Union), HP workers and many more. When workers refuse to work, there will be lesser output on monthly basis. As such it is justified to have more laws passed in Parliament to secure the interest of firms. For instance, firms must be allowed to take stricter action against workers or union if they cause severe losses or making it more difficult for unions to call for strikes. Between the two measures discussed, it is argued that public investment onto education is a better policy. This is because UK economy has moved away from industries that require manual skills to those that need mental skills. In other words, UK has moved away from manufacturing sector to services sector like banking and finance and also quaternary like research. Today, size of service sector is about 76% of her GDP compared to manufacturing sector of 22%. Having said so, critics argue that it has an extremely long effect lags. This is because the building of schools and having a targeted number of skilled graduates are not an overnight effort. It may take as long as a decade before noticing any change in the level of productivity. Also one must consider that UK experiences one of the highest numbers of brain drain. It loses its professional workers to other English speaking countries like US, Australia and New Zealand. In such circumstance, AS may not shift rightward by much As a matter of fact, there must be some balance in power between the employers and labour unions. Although the weakening of unions creates a more flexible labour market (easy to hire and fire without negotiation with trade union) and lower down the costs of production, some firms might abuse the power given. For instance, workers in certain industries may be underpaid or in some circumstance retrenched without any good reason and justified compensation. In some cases, employers may freeze wages of workers for their own good such as taking home fat bonuses. Furthermore, it is already difficult to organise a strike due to the structure of economy. Workers in services sectors, say a bank are not as clustered and large in numbers like those in factories .

Analysis for Still I rise Maya Angelou Essay Example Analysis for Still I rise Maya Angelou Paper Analysis for Still I rise Maya Angelou Paper Essay Topic: Poetry You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, Ill rise. It means that there are people in your life that are going to say bad lies about you which will make you maybe sad but no matter how bad these lies are you can still get up and not let these lies hold you back from your goals Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? Cause I walk like Ive got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still Ill rise. If u r trying to bother me when I am not harming you just because there are differences between you and me that still wouldnt harm u, I will still rise and wont care about how badly u break me down so I will still rise and reach my goals Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Dont you take it awful hard Cause I laugh like Ive got gold mines Diggin in my own backyard. A College Essay Coachs Take on the College Admissions Scandal

A College Essay Coachs Take on the College Admissions Scandal The college admissions scandal that has been all over the news has inspired me to break my recent blogging silence. The greed and lack of integrity exhibited by employees of top universities disturb me greatly. Since I am a Yale graduate, I have received a couple of apologetic letters from President Salovey; I hope that the school’s promise to be more vigilant in its admissions process holds true. Since I am a college admissions essay coach, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by the media. Both USA Today and Rob Hart of WBBM talked to me about ethics in college admissions. Here are the article and radio clip for your reading and listening pleasure: USA Today:  Do all students cheat on their college applications? No, consultants say, but there are plenty of problems. I get calls from people who want me to write essays for them, and I won’t do that, said Brenda Bernstein, who runs The Essay Expert. This student is being judged on their own ability. But there are services that do that. And some sell academic essays as well. WBBM Newsradio Show: Essay Coach Talks Best Practices For College Applications The Dual Life of a Resume Writer and College Essay Coach What strikes me, in particular, is that many people conflate the ethics of writing a professional’s resume with the ethics of writing a student’s college essay. I keep explaining to reporters and others why they are not the same. One of my resume writer colleagues posted this comment about the college admissions scandal to my Facebook page: Just to be devils advocate here, I dont see the difference between writing essays with information students have given about THEIR story and writing a resume for someone who tells you his / her story about his / her career. We dont put on the bottom of their resumes that it was written by us. Most executives have their executive assistants write their letters for them. Is that cheating by the executive (we have all seen where an executive calls his assistant into the office to take a memo)? Like I said, just playing devils advocate.  :-) My response: There is no assumption or requirement that resumes be written by the job applicant. In fact, many hiring managers say they *prefer* a professionally written resume. Theres also no rule that a student cant get some coaching and editing help on their essay. English teachers and guidance counselors have been doing this for years. Whats important to me is that the essay is truthful, at the level the student is capable of writing, and in the students voice. What I would add to the above is that there is most definitely a rule that students must write their own application essays. Admissions committees judge them for the quality of their writing and how they express themselves, because they are going to be required to use those skills in their college careers. By contrast, an executive wont be expected to write a good resume as part of his or her job. Moving Toward Truth Integrity My job as a college essay coach is to help a student tell the truth – not the version of the truth they think an admissions committee wants to hear. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve asked an applicant, â€Å"Is that really true?† and gotten the response, â€Å"Well not completely. But it seems like that’s what I should have gotten out of it.† Again and again, I point the writer to the truth, which is always more interesting than the picture perfect story they thought they should tell. As a resume writer, too, my job is to tell the truth. The facts speak louder than any flowery language we could write to make something sound better than it is. We stick with the facts. The cheating uncovered in the recent college admissions scandal goes far beyond helping students think through the best way to tell their story. It goes way past the level of supporting an executive by presenting her accomplishments powerfully in writing. I hope the world recognizes this difference. More important, I fervently wish that parents, college admissions advisors, university administrators and sports coaches choose to act with integrity as they shepherd young adults into what could be the most important four years of their lives.
